Introduction
I remember it would be excellent to exist able to put a description of the particular into the mouseover box (that has the proper noun and weapon stats) that comes up when you put your mouse over any inventory items.
It could be used to add so much more of a story line to texture packs, peradventure some backstory, maybe just random humorous quotes, whatever the writer wants.
This would be especially useful for texture packs that rename the items, since it could be used to help articulate up any confusion every bit to what detail is what.
Example
Anyway, here'south how it might await ingame:
The italicized text in the middle is what i am suggesting be added.
How it could exist implemented
This should be possible through editing the same language file that allows you to change item names. en_US.lang for example, is the one used for english linguistic communication files.
Anyway, the mode to add together a description could be as simple as calculation information technology in curly brackets directly following the item proper noun without a space.
For instance, this is how the line for the diamond sword would appear every bit pictured above:
Information technology may likewise be necessary to let for a second font to be added for smaller calibration, if the game is unable to scale fonts down. The mouseover box should stretch equally needed to accommodate the description, just a character limit would be advisable.

This is a keen idea and I fully support!
Although not useful in 100% vanilla Minecraft it would be an extremely useful addition for Resource Pack artists that desire to incorporate a fleck of lore into their packs or mapmakers that want to do this kind of thing without fiddling effectually with NBT.

It wouldn't hurt if a few vanilla items had descriptions as well. Ender pearls for instance, unless you checked the wiki you lot'd have no idea what they're for.

Hmmm. Can't yous already do this by editting NBT tags?
Why tin can't we just accept an in-game NBT editor for map makers? Information technology would simplify a LOT of things.
EDIT: I see what you're saying, forget this. I back up.
Until yous right click with them, and so you'll discover out pretty fast...

The teleporting is obvious, but making them into ender eyes, not and so much.
Anyhow, i'll have to await into NBT tags, i've never heard of it.

Yo 13thMurder o/
I like the idea. It would be very helpful to exist able to do this for all items by default. Currently you can simply do this for especially spawned in items with the new features in the 1.7 snapshot.

Yeah, that's somewhat similar to what i'm going for, only for resources packs instead. It would be extremely useful. In fact, it would be even ameliorate as a characteristic for resource packs. Right now it seems like information technology'south only usable on servers, but if it were function of resoure packs, in addition to giving packs some lore behind them, map makers could make use of it as well to guide people toward secrets, or to create puzzles based on subtle hints.

A clarification of the file itself? I dubiety it.
If y'all're asking if the default texture pack would include item descriptions if it were possible, that's really up to mojang. It might be useful in default to add descriptions to a few items that take uses beyond the obvious. Ender pearls for example. Yous probably would never figure out y'all can turn them into ender eyes unless y'all check the minecraft wiki.

Actually NBT Tags were added since the 1.5...
Information technology's quite piece of cake: NBT Tags definite every additional information about an object or mob or even particular, for example:
Until the 1.7 you could use this characteristic by editing the map files with the NBT Explorer...
Now the possibility of using datatags (That's what the NBT Tags are) in commands was added...
and so you tin do like this for case:
/requite 13thMurder minecraft:diamond_sword 1 0 {brandish:{Lore:["Great for killing, murdering, maiming, dismembering, and cut waffles into bite sized pieces!"]}
On the english Minecraft Wiki it is explained every bit well, but not very well...
Simply you can watch
... That guy has many videos about this topic, I suggest watching them.

I moreso meant something that could be added to language files. This seems server/map specific.

I believe NBT tags are moreso things players tin can add to items, such as when you lot name your item using an anvil.
